You can DO Constructive for others, but if you’re not BEING Constructive for yourself – it is sustainable?
We can all fall into the trap of thinking – as long as everyone else sees me as Constructive, why does it matter how I see myself? It’s great that we can do Constructive for others, but if we’re not being Constructive for us – it’s going to take a whole lot of energy and effort to ‘create’ that experience.
If it was your team mate who made a mistake, how would you talk to them? Most people say they would encourage, coach, and support that person. But when I ask ‘what do you say to yourself when it’s YOU who made the mistake?’ the conversation sounds quite different: “That was terrible, it’s unacceptable, you’re always making mistakes”. If that’s how we spoke to other people they probably wouldn’t stick around. How can we be the coach to ourselves rather than the critic?
This month’s Construction #hack – take note of the conversations you have with you. Are you being the supportive coach or the critic?
