The Culture Transformation Achievement Award

Tranzqual is the Industry Training Organisation (ITO) responsible for setting training standards for the road transport, warehousing and logistics, freight forwarding, passenger services and ports & stevedoring industries in New Zealand, representing 3.1% of the workforce.

Wayne Smith was appointed CEO in 2007 and led a strategic review which transformed the organisation from a centralised command and control business model into a stronger organisation in terms of its culture, and leadership approach as well as management capability and capacity.

A clear strategic direction was set and a strong leadership team driven by high quality 360° feedback was formed. Organisational, team and individual performances were linked back to Tranzqual's overall strategy.

Tranzqual bucked the trend and put in a new layer of management who made improvements through a non-threatening "growth" approach rather than a "change" approach. Decision making was decentralised, the customer service team was increased and investments were made in the development of high performers. Addressing poor performance quickly and encouraging work-life-balance supported Tranzqual’s high expectations for the whole team. They celebrated success, and wove a strong social element throughout the business, all of which has resulted in a decrease in staff turnover from 68 percent in 2007 to 16 percent in 2008.
