HIsmelt is a radical new technology for pig iron production effectively replacing traditional blast furnace technology at a lower cost and greater environmental efficiency. HIsmelt is a Rio Tinto subsidiary company.

The shift from a very Defensive culture, to a strong and Constructive culture helped overcome many of the difficulties generally encountered during new technology start-ups. A new ‘can do’ attitude motivated teams to move from an individual research focus towards a greater sense of teamwork, achievement, fun and openness.

This focus on culture and leadership behaviour, supported HIsmelt’s transformation from Australia’s largest research project to a commercially producing plant in the space of six years.
