Opening Up More Meaningful Development Conversations with LSI Digital: Insights from Nigel Surry, Metcash
At Human Synergistics, our goal has always been to help people gain meaningful insight into their thinking and behaviour—and then translate that awareness into lasting growth. With the introduction of the Digital experience of the Life Styles Inventory™ (LSI) , we’re seeing new opportunities to deepen those conversations and make development more accessible, engaging, and sustainable.
Few people are better placed to comment on this evolution than Nigel Surry, Leadership Facilitator and Coach at Metcash. Having facilitated numerous Life Styles Inventory™ (LSI) debriefs over many years, Nigel has experienced firsthand how the digital platform is changing the coaching conversation.
Shifting from Report Navigation to Participant Curiosity
One of the most significant differences Nigel has observed is how LSI Digital changes the flow of a debrief conversation.
“The conversations free up into participant-led dialogue,” Nigel explains. “I find myself less ‘guiding through a report’ and more responding to the curiosity presented by the participant. The conversation is controlled by where their eyes go, not mine.”
Traditional debriefs often followed the logical structure of a report, moving systematically from one page to the next. While effective, the experience could sometimes feel linear. LSI Digital enables a more dynamic approach, allowing participants to follow their own areas of interest and explore insights in real time.
Nigel likens the difference to skiing. “In the past, my first debrief mostly followed the logical order of a report—a ski run with a clear start, progression and finish. Now the conversation flows with curiosity. Once I became familiar with the platform, the whole mountain opened up.”
Creating Stronger Moments of Insight
A recurring theme in Nigel’s experience is the platform’s ability to accelerate self-awareness.
One feature that consistently generates powerful conversations is the ability to view LSI 1 (Self Description) and LSI 2 (Others’ Perceptions) data side-by-side. “I notice sharper insight and more consideration of the relationships between self and other-rater data,” he says. “I’ve recognised some quite instant revelations that we can explore further.”
By removing the need to navigate between multiple reports, pages and paper-based resources, participants can focus their cognitive energy where it matters most: understanding themselves.
The result is often those memorable “light bulb” moments that every coach hopes to see. “The LSI is great at reinforcing self-awareness or helping to build new awareness,” Nigel says. “Those moments are plentiful, and I’m privileged to be a part of them.”
Supporting Development Beyond the Debrief
While insightful debrief conversations are important, sustainable development happens between coaching sessions—in the everyday moments when awareness becomes action.
Nigel sees LSI Digital as a powerful enabler of that ongoing reflection. “The magic happens in the times between coaching sessions,” he explains. “When awareness shows up in a person’s day-to-day life. LSI Digital helps build that awareness, but it’s the lived experiences that create acceptance and ultimately action.”
The platform gives participants immediate access to their data, insights and development resources whenever they need them.
Whether it’s reflecting on a challenging stakeholder meeting, recognising a tendency towards Avoidance under pressure, or noticing Perfectionistic behaviours emerging as deadlines approach, participants can revisit their profile in the moment—rather than waiting for their next coaching session. “The immediacy builds personal accountability,” Nigel says.
Reigniting Growth Through Continued Access
One of the most encouraging outcomes Nigel has observed has been the way participants reconnect with their development journey long after their initial program concludes.
Working alongside Human Synergistics, Metcash recently encouraged past participants—some who had completed their programs up to four years earlier—to revisit the platform and reflect on their growth.
“The feedback was fantastic,” Nigel recalls. “Personal development can become deprioritised in a busy world, so sparking the flame was all it took for some people to become curious again.”
For many, the platform became an always-available development companion. “It was almost like having a coach, mentor and Culture Bites podcast on call.”
Simplicity That Enables Deeper Conversations
While LSI Digital contains a wealth of information, Nigel believes its greatest strength may be its simplicity.
Particularly valuable is the ability to instantly compare the 20 behavioural statements within each style across self-ratings, others’ ratings, median scores and gaps.
“The immediacy of these datapoints being visible has accelerated insight,” he explains. “There’s no more flicking through reports or scrolling back and forth to find a relevant page. The cognitive load is focused on insight rather than navigation.”
This ease of use benefits both participants and facilitators, allowing conversations to stay focused on meaning, behaviour and growth.
A New Level of Flexibility for Facilitators
For coaches and facilitators, Nigel’s biggest learning has been recognising that there is no single pathway through a debrief.
“There is no ‘one style’,” he says. “With familiarity of the platform, you can follow the conversation rather than the logical sequence of pages in a report.”
His advice to other facilitators beginning their LSI Digital journey is simple: “Play with the platform yourself. There is no one single way to enjoy the benefits—but once you jump in, you won’t want to stop.”
Empowering More Human Conversations
At Human Synergistics, technology is never the goal. The goal is always deeper insight, greater self-awareness and meaningful behaviour change.
Nigel’s experience highlights what becomes possible when digital tools are designed to support—not replace—the human coaching relationship.
By making insights more accessible, encouraging participant curiosity, and enabling ongoing reflection beyond the debrief, LSI Digital is helping facilitators and participants alike have richer conversations and create more sustainable development outcomes.
Because ultimately, the most powerful moments are not found in a report or a platform—they happen when a person sees themselves differently and chooses to grow.
