Actual operating culture
The actual operating culture represents the behavioural norms and expectations that govern the way people approach their work and interact with each other. They are the ways people believe they are expected to behave in to 'fit in' and 'get ahead'. They are the behaviours people have learned as ways of dealing with the demands placed upon them by the organisation. The Human Synergistics' Organisational Culture Inventory (OCI) asks memebrs to identify the extent to which a variety of behaviours are encouraged and required of people within the organisation. Our Australian and New Zealand data suggests that most organisations are unwittingly encouraging cultures that cause people to behave in passive/defensive and aggressive/defensive ways. In contrast to the preferred culture, a typical actual operating culture might be one where people are encouraged to use passive and aggressive defensive behaviours, such as:
