The Power of Rapport Building in Debriefs

Putting in time to build rapport at the start of a debrief can be invaluable later in bringing their data to life. Rather than jumping straight into the data, use some time upfront to understand who the person is, what is going on for them (at work and home).

People might have the same LSI data profile - but the story could be completely different. Start drawing out the story early in the debrief during the rapport phase.

Don't over-prepare otherwise you can start build assumptions from the data beforehand. Discover the data and their story together with them.

Let what the person says inform your next question... but here are a few ideas of some questions you could ask:

- Tell me about your role at work
- How is you relationship with your manager? ... Peers? ... Direct reports?
- Talk to me about what's happening for you outside of work

Even if you might know the person already, it's still important to build rapport in the room. Ask about what has been happening for them lately, what are they working on at the moment, what's happening outside of work?

Don't underestimate the power of rapport building.
