How does a leader of a multinational company face the challenges of keeping his business viable in a country with limited population growth, where markets are static and operations are remote from key decision makers? Alan McGilvray, Chairman and Managing Director of Bayer in Australia and New Zealand believes the key is to start by taking a good look in the mirror. Alan will share his insights on leadership and his journey towards organisational change within Bayer in Australia and New Zealand. His experience in looking at his own actions as a leader have been key to his organisations success. In Alans view, the challenge of looking at oneself as a leader, and not automatically placing blame on others, is a fundamental principal of leadership transformation. Alan will share the practical steps he took to secure the viability of the Bayer business in Australia and New Zealand, including an innovative culture change strategy. Alan McGilvray began his career by studying Polymer chemistry in London, where in 1973 he gained his doctorate. He then went on to work at Polysar SA in Fribourg, Switzerland and Purina SA in Brussels Belgium before joining Bayer in 1979. Alan McGilvray worked in the United Kingdom and Germany in various divisions of Bayer, and from 1996 until December 2000 was the Managing Director and Senior Representative of the Bayer Group in India. In January 2001, he was appointed Managing Director for Bayer Australia, New Zealand and the Oceania. Breaking Bayers tradition, he was the first British Managing Director (with Australian citizenship) to be appointed by the Australian subsidiary of the German pharmaceutical and chemical giant. In addition to his role as Country Group representative, Alan McGilvray is also Head of Bayer Polymers in Australia and New Zealand. As the Senior Bayer representative in Australia and New Zealand he is also the chairman of the board for Bayer New Zealand Ltd, Bayer Chemicals Pty Ltd, Laserlite Pty Ltd and Bayer Australia Ltd. |
