Putting people first at HIsmelt By Scott Maclean, Horizon Public Relations Page 1 of 3 The Situation HIsmelt, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto, recently developed new technology to make iron that is set to revolutionise the global steel making industry. In 1999, HIsmelt scientists based in Kwinana Western Australia made a major research breakthrough. They perfected the process of direct smelting - a lower cost, environmentally efficient alternative to existing blast furnace technology. This direct smelting technology provided HIsmelt with an enormous opportunity to turn their hard-earned research into a commercial success. To achieve this, Managing Director Duncan Price recognised the need to grow the company from a small research team highly protective of their work into a fully operational steel plant. Price had previously undertaken a Life Styles Inventory (LSI) himself and, through his exposure to Human Synergistics and years of experience, was well aware of the workplace culture issues that could arise as a result of restructure and rapid growth. The existing organisational culture indicated that the team of scientists, researchers and metallurgists were reluctant to share information or work as a team, while displaying highly perfectionist tendencies.
