By Michael Gourley, Director, Human Synergistics New Zealand Human Synergistics Director Mike Gourley has written a new book: The Psychological Edge in Rugby. It applies the work of Human Synergistics to this popular team sport, particularly in relationship to Achievement behaviours versus Power and Competitive values. The Psychological Edge in Rugby is an outcome of Mike's experience as a player and coach. It follows on from his research into the COACH exercise which is now proving a best seller in America. COACH presents participants with choices about how to motivate and turn around a team which is struggling to succeed. It highlights the Human Synergistics' diagnostic circumplex styles. The new book also quotes Dr Robert Cooke's Leadership/Impact research.
Mike's assessment of international coaches rates Australia's Rod Macqueen as the best coach in modern rugby. Analysis of Macqueen's writings shows him to have high Achievement, Self-Actualising and Perfectionistic qualities. He also demonstrated outstanding leadership. Underlying Macqueen's approach was the belief that success on the field would come only if player bonding and team spirit were generally boosted - that's evidence of the Humanistic-Encouraging style.
While this book is about rugby it is also applicable to other team sports and to business in general. The Psychological Edge in Rugby is available from major book stores in New Zealand and is being distributed in Australia by Australian Scholarly Publishing. Orders can be made direct from Human Synergistics. Contents and Excerpts Preface 187 pages Michael Gourley is a Director of Human Synergistics in New Zealand.
